The Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef system in the world, comprising about 3,000 reefs and 300 islands stretching along the 2600 km and covering an area of 344 400 km². The reef is located in the Coral Sea, near the coast of Queensland, in northeast Australia.
The area occupied by the reefs is greater than the UK and Ireland's together. Since 1981 is part of UNESCO. Situated in the north-eastern part, near the region of Queensland, the Great Barrier Reef provides a colourful and exciting spectacle of coloured coral and more than 10,000 unique marine species (6000 species of crustaceans, molluscs, turtles, dolphins). For scientists, for lovers of the aquatic life, for photographers, for amateur divers, fishermen or for any tourist, the Great Barrier Reef is a place of dreams. Animal, mineral and vegetable, all in one.
The reef life is seasonal: October, November and December are the months with the active mating underwater life; from January to May is a kindergarten invading waters around the reefs; June to September is the season of fishing delicacies.
The Great Barrier Reef disappears little by little every day, and despite the fact that scientists were waiting for a regeneration of it, now they got to say that if this miracle of nature was a person, then that person would be a "clinically dead patient ".
