One of the busiest plazas of Madrid which occupied at several stages an important political role in the city's history. Puerta del Sol is the Kilometer 0 of all Spanish national roads and holds the symbol of the city, the famous statue of the Bear and the tree.

The place is particularly animated on Sundays afternoon where Madrilans go out and wander in the old part of the town, starting at Puerta del Sol and walking around towards la Latina, Plaza Santa Ana or Gran Via, and pass by a lot of shops and bars.

Puerta del Sol is also famous for the countdown of midnight eve where the Spanyards mass up and do the New Year's countdown like in times square in New York, so if you're in Madrid on New Year's Eve, you know where to go.
