Renown for their beauty and colors the eight monasteries from Suceava Country have enter the UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993 and the Sucevita Monastery in 2010.
I recommend you a tour of this gorgeous churches and their surroundings in order to have a real and original view upon the Romanian history and its great relation with the orthodox church and the rural traditions.
I decided to write you a two days tour that will begin probably in Bucharest(A).
B - From Bucharest you go north towards the city of Suceava. On the way you will reach the Probota Monastery.
C - In the City of Suceava you can visit the Church of St. George and afterwards you can find accommodation in the city and get ready for the next day because you still have six more churches to visit.
D - The second day you can start with the Church of the Holy Rood of Pătrăuţi, the oldest church from the eight.
E - I guess many of you have heard about the Voronet blue for which the Church of St George of the former Voroneţ Monastery is renown for. The exterior walls are painted in this vibrant color that caught the eyes of historians who decided to name it Voronet blue. The Monastery was build by Stephen the Great as a commemoration for the victory at the battle of Vaslui.
F - If Voronet has the color blue, the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin of the former Humor Monastery is known for its reddish brown frescoes.
G - The next Church of the Beheading of St. John the Baptist, the Arbore Monastery was named after the Boyar who build it, Luca Arbore. The boyar was the highest rank of the feudal Moldavia.
H - By far my favorite monastery is the Church of the Resurrection, Suceviţa Monastery. The legend says that a woman paid for her sins for 30 years by collecting stone to build the church.
I - Although it is not among the eight monasteries that are listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Putna Monastery deserves your attention. After the victory at Kilia Stephen the great began building this monastery as a presents to God!
J - The last from the eight is The Church of the Annunciation of the Moldoviţa Monastery. Build by the illegitimate son of Stephen the Great, Petru Rares, the Monastery had the role of a barrier in the path of Muslim Ottomans coming from the east.
From here you can travel to Maramures Country that awaits you with other beautiful and rustic places!
