It's very surprising to know that Madrid did'nt have a Cathedral until the 20th Century. The reason is that Toledo which used to be the Capital until 1561 had it's own Cathedral, and continued "resisting" for centuries the wish of Madrid to have it's "own" Cathedral.
Finally, it's in the late 19th Century than the decision was taken King Alphonso XII an the first stone posed, but it did not finish until 1993 and consacrated by Pope John Paul II.

I personnaly still prefer Toledo's Cathedral, breathtaking monument in a great historical town. The good part of Almudena Cathedral is that you can visit it just after of before the Royal Palace.
