When visiting Madrid for a few days, you must try to spare one or two days and visit Toledo! It is very easy to go there either by train (in 30 minutes by a direct high speed train from Atocha Station) or by bus (around an hour).

Ideally, you will need two days to fully enjoy this exceptionally rich city in terms of Architecture, Art and Craftmanship. This is why many of Spain's Sovereigns eleceted it as capital, and that the UNESCO declared World Heritage site.

It would be better to do it during week days in order to avoid heavy crowds. The most beautiful moments in the city are during sunset and in the summer,... it is magical!

Toledo is located 70 km south of Madrid and it is the capital of the province of Toledo and of autonomous community of Castile–La Mancha. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986 for its extensive cultural and monumental heritage as one of the former capitals of the Spanish Empire and place of coexistence of Christian, Muslim and Jewish cultures, as well as the place where harsh religious persecutions were held against the Jews by the Visigoths.

Among the monuments to visit, there is of course the famous Cathedral de Toledo, one of the most beautiful in Spain, and for a long time the Cathedral of Madrid. The Alcazar, which is now the Library of the Castilla La Mancha Region as well as the Army Museum, is also worth a visit, with the Synaguogue and the Conceptionist Monastry. But most importantly, the beauty of Toledo is to walk in its old and charming streets, around the walls and the gates.

Many famous people and artists were born or have lived in Toledo, including Al-Zarqali, Garcilaso de la Vega, Eleanor of Toledo, Alfonso X and El Greco.
