I really appreciate local bakeries where you can still buy a nice and most of all tasty piece of bread, so I always look for these bakeries when I'm in a foreign country. Oud Huis Himschoot is a bakery to die for.

Situated in one of the most picturesque squares of Ghent and having a self-employed baker, this small, but very delightful bakery is the favorite of locals and tourists alike. Entering the bakery you will certainly be overwhelmed by the smell of fresh bread and by just having a look at the place you might get stuck on the phrase: what should I choose, as everything looks so tasty you certainly would like to just try it all! Every nook and cranny of this place is filled with delicious homemade breads and pastries, and there are more than 70 varieties.

How could you decide, which one to choose? But if you really can't decide, I would suggest to go with something local, and ask for a local specialty the "mastel". A mastel is a small bread, which looks like a doughnut, but in fact is made of brioche dough to which cinnamon is added. It is excellent for breakfast! But if you want bread you're in trouble, because you will certainly get lost between all the varieties.

However, you could go for the bio bread, which comes in a lot of types: with muesli, with pumpkin seed, sunflower seed, linseed, sesame seed or melon seed. There is also an interestingly named koala bread, made of Australian bio flour. If it wasn't for all the other beautiful places, restaurants and cafés, I would say that Oud Huis Himschoot alone makes Ghent worth visiting!
