"If you study in IE and you are looking for a gym nearby you have two choices: Basic Fit (140m from the library) or Crunch Fitness (60m from the library). When comparing both gyms, there used to be a huge differentiation factor: price: Basic Fit (former name: FitUp) was the low-cost gym and CR7 Fitness Crunch (former name: Dynamic Fitness) was the high-end gym. But now both gyms have been acquired by other chains, so the identity of both gyms stayed the same but the prices changed: both are now low-cost gyms. So read the following review and the one I did for CR7 Crunch to facilitate your gym decision." Installations: A terrible quality floor in the weight section, low ceiling (high enough to perform overhead exercises if you are average-sized but too low to perform muscle ups or high box jumps). Material and equipment: Low range Technogym and Matrix machines and the dumbells only go up to 40kg. A lot of benches but only one squat rack (located in the soft-floor area) and no lifting platform. They have 3 or 4 rubber resistance bands (but only one of each) and they collect broken bar clips so plan around 5 minutes each time to find a pair that is working. They have TVs everywhere around the gym (in Crunch Fitness as well) for those who prefer to sit in a machine and relax instead of training. Cardio: The usual (treadmill, elliptical, bike) plus a few steppers but no Stairmaster. Additionally, they have a couple or three sandbags, and a calisthenics structure (but again: the ceiling is too low). Staff: Might have changed since Basic Fit acquired FitUp, but the staff that was in FitUp was very unprofessional, clueless about training and rude. One of the guys who always used to complain about people doing deadlifts was doing deadlift himself (needless to say his form was terrible), but using his own bumper plates (a.k.a. CrossFit plates) to perform the deadlift quietly, and when he was done he was locking them up and would not allow anyone else to use them. It is the only Basic Fit I have been to in Spain, but it is incomparable with Basic Fit in France (Basic Fit France is far better).

Installations: With the basic membership you get a free access to the sauna and Turkish bath, and you can pay for sunbeds. With the premium membership on top of free sauna and Turkish bath, you get free unlimited time for sunbeds, and a free clean towel every day. The floor in the weight section is terrible quality, and the ceiling is too low (high enough to perform overhead exercises if you are average-sized but too low to perform muscle ups or high box jumps). Material and equipment: Low range Technogym and Matrix machines and the dumbells only go up to 40kg. Only one squat rack and no plate loaded leg press. They have TVs everywhere around the gym (in Basic Fit as well) for those who prefer to sit in a machine and relax instead of training. Cardio: The usual (treadmill, elliptical, bike) but no steppers and no Stairmaster. Staff: The Staff in CR7 Crunch is what makes it worth training there: they are very friendly, respectful and polite.

University of Mannheim fitness and strength Studio D2
Great Uni Gym
Mannheim, Germany
Mannheim, Germany
Type : Sports activity
If you study at Mannheim University, you have two main gym choices: D2 (uni gym) or Venice Beach. At first, Venice Beach seems more appealing, but do not fool yourself: only the name is: Venice Beach in Mannheim is the exact opposite of the original Venice Beach Gym (a.k.a. Muscle Beach) of Los Angeles, California. Instead, it more reminiscent in a sense of Planet Fitness *(also present in Los Angeles), except it is very expensive and sleeveless t-shirts and tank tops are forbidden for man only (even though they are allowed in PF). So if you chose to become a member at D2 University Gym, you have made a good decision! The gym is very affordable (only 66 euros per semester). And the gym has everything you need to train: dumbells up to 65kg, trap deadlift bar, etc. The staff is very friendly and helpful(you can borrow chalk or belts from them). The only small downsides are the following: -it is difficult to sign up if you are not a student/staff at Mannheim Universität. -during some hours of the day, deadlifts are forbidden (which is totally understandable given the fact that there is a nursery below the gym and babies need to sleep). -there are no wall mirrors in the gym. Instead the gym is provided with plenty of movable dance mirrors (it is a double-edged sword: you need to take and move a mirror every time you need to use one, but on the other hand you can place them where you want and adjust them to fit your preferences). *check out my recommendation for Planet Fitness to know more about it
