Rips (courants de baines) are very strong currents runnning out to sea. They are very common along the whole atlantic coastline. These currents provoke lots of drowning incidents in the summer season. Lifeguarded beaches are the safest places to swim. Don't go swimming in the ocean if there is no lifeguard on duty!
If you do get caught in a rip stay calm. Do not try to swim against the current! Try to escape by swimming parallel to the beach.
