If you need to visit just one thing in Belgrade, than you don't want to miss the Fortress and surrounding Kalemegdan Park. First at 125 meters high, you will enjoy from there the most beautiful view on Belgrade and the connection between the Danube and Sava rivers.
Second, the park is the most beautiful one in the city and monuments are the most important historically. And finally, by taking the best way to go there by walking through the pedestrian streets along Knez Mihailova, you'll get to visit the most beautiful part of the historical downtown.

This is an oasis of peace where belgrade citizens come to relax, ride their bicycles or do some sports.

You'll find on the hill the Military Museum, a Zoo (one of the oldest in Europe), and a number of attractions and sculptures.

The Fortresses history is closely linked to the city's, since it's the oldest spot of the city, and for a long time, the city developped whithin its walls.
