Madrid's public transportation is definitly one of the best ones in Europe, with 4 main public transportation means: intercity buses (EMT), the underground (Metro), sub-urban buses (Interurbano) and sub-urban trains (Cercanias).

The network is modern, safe and clean, with many lines enjoying Air Conditionning, TV, and many other features. You have in almost every metro station entrance a security guard, and in 18 months of usage, I never felt any danger of any kind.
In addition, the hole network is very clean and well organized.

The fares are reasonable despite a price increase in September 2012. One ticket will cost you 1.5 EUR for 5 stations and 2 EUR for longer itineraries. It will cost you 12.2 EUR the 10 tickets and 52.2 EUR the monthly card for the A zone.
