Sacre Coeur is also called "the white castle in the sky" and the way to the basilica that watches Montmartre from above, is compared by some with the ascension to Heaven. The basilica was built in 1875 as an act of penance meant to bring hope after France was defeated by Prussia in 1870. Built in the Roman-Byzantine style, Sacre-Coeur was consecrated in 1919 and was named basilica, becoming a holy place.
Before entering the Basilica, stop for a moment to admire the beauty of Paris, seen from the square in front of Sacre-Coeur. Even better, you can climb in the dome at the top of the building, from where you have a view of 50 km around it. An attraction point inside the church is the Savoyarde bell, with a diameter of 3 meters and a weight of 18.835 kg - the biggest bell in France. The mosaic inside the basilica, designed by Luc-Olivier Merson (1922) also needs to be seen, and it represents the Holy Heart of Christ, adored by the Virgin Mary and Joan of Arc. The Sacre-Coeur crypt houses statues of saints and a relic, believed to be be the Holy Heart (Sacre-Coeur) of Christ.
The entrance to the basilica is free, but access to the crypt and dome is charged 5 euros. This fee is worth paying for the spectacular views from the dome of the basilica, the second tallest observation point in Paris, after the Eiffel Tower.
