With around 16000 Taxis in Madrid, it is easy to find an available one when you are in the main streets of the city. It's a great way to get around and usually drivers respect the regulation. Nevertheless, be sure that the driver has started the meter, and that it is set to the right rate. The driver must be able to justify all additional supplements.

You will easilly identify an official Madrid Taxi since they are all white with a diagonal red stripe on the front doors, the taxi sign on the roof and a Libre/Occupado sign on the front window. When the taxi sign is in Green and no numbers are indicated on it, it means the taxi is available.

You can easilly stop one in the street by simply raising your hand, or get one from specific ranks in the city, indicated by a blue sign with a white letter 'T'. At railway and bus stations and at the airport taxis must be taken from the corresponding ranks.

Most taxis don't take Credit Cards, even if an increasing number starts doing it. It is better to have cash when taking one, with 20 EUR bills, since often taxis don't have change for more than 50 EUR.

Complaint
To make a complaint you have to get a receipt from the driver which is a legal obligation for him if asked to. You also have to write down his ITax identification number, and the official taxi number which is shown on the dashboard. If you don't have the possibility to write, you can use your mobile phone camera to save these numbers. In addition, try to take the number plate, the date and the journey taken. There is an official form to fill in that you can get from the tourist information office. You must then submit your complaint to Oficina Municipal del Taxi.
